COLUMBUS - The biggest play in Lucas Cubs football history doesn't even have a name.
As as poetic as can be, it is a pass play.
With the Cubs looking at a fourth and goal play from the 13-yard line trailing Harvest Prep 12-7 with just 54 seconds remaining in the game, the Cubs called a timeout and Lucas coach Scott Spitler drew up a play the Cubs had never run, let alone seen in the playbook before.
The play called for the entire offense to move to the left like it was a roll out pass play to the far side. Senior Riley Mounts was to block the back side for a second and then release and senior quarterback Logan Niswander was to throw the ball to the back side to Mounts who would be wide open.
The play worked to perfection as the score gave the Cubs the 13-12 lead which then improved to 15-12 after Ethan Sauder plowed in the two-point conversion.
'We knew they played so aggressive over the top because they are so fast,' Spitler said. 'I thought we could get a throwback so we drew it up in the dirt to be quite honest. It worked to perfection. Two kids making a play and I couldn't be more proud of them.'
The play will go down as the biggest play in Lucas football history at least for another week as the Cubs stopped Harvest Prep in the final 54 seconds to punch their ticket to the Division VII state championship game.
'It is awesome,' Niswander said of the final offensive play. 'Spit called that play knowing that if it didn't work, we were done for. I saw Riley slip out and I thought there wasn't any way he was going to be open. I threw it and he caught it. I blacked out and it was the craziest feeling in the world.'
The Cubs, a predominately run-first offense, can now look at the pass play and know it made history which is as poetic as it gets in high school football.
'It is crazy,' Mounts said. 'We never pass so that alone was insane. For Spit to believe in me to catch that ball is just another level of amazing feelings. Logan threw a great ball and I just went up and got it.
'He just drew it up in a simple formation and I was just shocked. It was a motion pass play to the left and everyone moved that way and I was blocking the edge. I went for a drag after a second or two and was in the right spot.'
The play was so new and out of the ordinary, the Cubs don't even have a name for it — yet. It will makes its way into the playbook for next week's state title contest.
'It doesn't (have a name),' Niswander said. 'That was backyard football. Spit told Riley to run over there and it worked. I just have goosebumps right now.'
The Cubs and Harvest Prep Warriors battled to a scoreless tie in the first half as both defenses made big plays in key moments. Harvest Prep forced two fumbles for turnovers and the Cubs came up with defensive stand after defensive stand to keep it scoreless.
In the third quarter, the Warriors finally found themselves in field goal range, but Ethan Wallace broke through the line and came up with a huge block. A few plays later, the Cubs lit up the scoreboard on Ethan Sauder's 75-yard run and the Cubs were in control with 6:23 left in the third.
The Warriors responded quickly with a 5-yard run, but their 2-point conversion failed leaving Lucas with a 7-6 lead after the third.
With 7:35 left in the third, the Warriors delivered what seemed to be the knockout punch with a 76-yard pass play giving them the 12-7 lead setting up the heroics of Niswander.
With time winding down, Niswander broke through the line of scrimmage and scampered down inside the 5-yard line with 1:26 left in the game. After a few negative plays, the Cubs had the ball fourth and goal from the 13 which turned into The Play.
'I am so proud of (Niswander),' Spitler said. 'We are a control the ball and run the ball kind of offense and he is so unselfish. He is so talented, but he knows we butter our bread with the run. When we called his number tonight, he delivered with some big runs and a big throw. That is the quality of person he is.'
Mounts agreed.
'Logan is a heck of a player,' Mounts said. 'He goes out and does his best and is the leader of this team.'
The pass play may have been uncharacteristic of the Cubs, but it is something they practice every day.
'It is crazy, but we do spend a lot of time working on our pass game in practice just for those types of situations,' Spitler said. 'We would like to be able to throw it when we want to and not when we have to. Riley and Logan did a great job and the offensive line protected both of them and I couldn't be more proud.'
The Cubs held strong on the final defensive stand and with the exception of the 76-yard pass play, the Cubs played lights-out on the defensive side of the ball.
'Hats off to the defensive coaching staff,' Spitler said. 'They had the kids prepared and our defense played lights out. We gave up one big play, but everything else was in front of us and we made them earn everything.'
That was proof of the shutout in the first half against a potent Harvest Prep offense.
'I am so glad we got it done tonight,' Spitler said. 'We knew at halftime that this was state semifinal football. It was going to be a close one. It was going to be tight and every inch would be a fight. We kept fighting and we left everything on the field.'
They left everything and then some as most of the Lucas community stood on the field well after the game and only left because the lights got turned out. And now, the Cubs will play for a state championship.

'It is something I will never forget,' Niswander said. 'I can't even think right now. This is such an amazing moment.'
The Cubs overcame an overtime game in Week 11, a nail biter in Week 12 and a dramatic ending in Week 13 in the pouring raid to go along with a late score in Week 14 to send them to the title game. The fight in his team reminds Spitler of the Lucas community.
'That describes our community,' Spitler said. 'We aren't afraid to roll up our sleeves and fight for what we want. The community has each other's back and that mirrors our football team. We have great families and we earn everything and never expect anything to be easy.'
